Moving Wild Guppy Fry to a Grow-Out Tank ❤️????
~
I recently spotted three newborn guppy fry in my new Walstad aquarium! After observing them for two days, I noticed the adult wild guppies were outcompeting them for food. While I could add extra food, that would lead to overfeeding and uneaten food, which isn’t ideal for a low-tech, no-filter setup. Without a mechanical filter, excess food can quickly degrade water quality.
~
To give the fry a better chance at growth, I decided to move them to a temporary grow-out tank. This will make feeding easier and ensure they get enough nutrition.
~
I’m using another Walstad nano tank that I set up two months ago, currently home to ramshorn snails. Over the next few days, I plan to transfer more guppy fry from my other aquariums into this tank.

About the walstad nano tank:
~
This aquarium follows the Walstad method, a natural approach to fishkeeping that relies on a soil substrate and abundant live plants to create a self-sustaining ecosystem. The plants handle filtration and oxygenation, eliminating the need for filters or air pumps, making the setup low-maintenance. Maintaining a high plant-to-livestock ratio is key—plenty of plants absorb waste and keep the water clean, while a lower number of animals prevents nutrient buildup.
