The Pterophyllum altum, often called the Altum Angelfish, is the tallest and most elegant of the freshwater angelfish species. Native to the upper Orinoco and Atabapo Rivers in Colombia and Venezuela, this stunning cichlid thrives in warm, soft, acidic waters rich in vegetation.

Its scientific name Pterophyllum means "winged leaf" in Greek, a nod to its tall, triangular fins that resemble a leaf drifting through the water. Altum is Latin for "high" or "deep," referencing its impressive body height—reaching up to 18 inches (45 cm) from fin tip to fin tip!

Altums are known for their graceful swimming and social behavior. In the wild, they often form peaceful shoals—truly a sight to behold in blackwater habitats!
