Hippopotamuses are large, semiaquatic mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa. Although their name comes from the Greek for “river horse”—because of the time they spend in the water—their closest living relatives are whales, dolphins, and pigs. They can’t swim, breathe underwater, or even float—but they have developed a tactic that lets them nap underwater.
Hippos spend up to 16 hours a day submerged in rivers and lakes to keep their massive bodies cool under the hot African sun.
When hippos are in deep water, they can move by walking on the ground. When they need to breathe, hippos will push off the ground and rise up for air. Once they've taken a breath, hippos will sink back down into the water.
After elephants and rhinos, the hippopotamus is the next largest land mammal. It is also the largest extant land artiodactyl. Despite their physical resemblance to pigs and other terrestrial even-toed ungulates, the closest living relatives of the hippopotamids cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises, etc.), from which they diverged about 55 million years ago.
