Not all aquarium shrimp molt deaths show the white ring of death, and many failed molts are easy to miss. Shrimp can fail to molt when the shell doesn’t crack properly, only partially sheds, or when the new exoskeleton never hardens after molting. These issues are often caused by unstable water parameters, sudden water changes, GH, KH, pH, or TDS fluctuations, and poor mineral balance in the aquarium. Nutrition also plays a critical role, as shrimp require calcium, magnesium, protein, and trace minerals to build a strong exoskeleton. Even with normal water tests, inconsistent water chemistry or inadequate diet can lead to molt failure, stress, and shrimp deaths in freshwater aquariums.
