Cats sleep to conserve energy. Sure, other fur-covered mammals coast by on 8 hours of sleep (or less) per cycle, but cats may sleep to help regulate body temperature, as well as for pleasure.
That's right – your cat would sleep between 13 and 16 hours every single day. Interestingly enough, about 2/3rds of their lifetime are spent snoozing. Fun fact: There are just two other species which sleep more than your furry little feline friend, and these are opossums and bats.
Cats do sleep deeply but not always. Much like people, cats are often just snoozing. Light sleeping makes up about 3/4 of your cat's sleep time, with just 1/4 of their sleep time being devoted to deep sleep. When cats are snoozing lightly they get the rest they require but they're still alert.
Companionship. Finally, your cat may like sleeping with you simply because they like and trust you. Your cats know you take good care of them and they consider you to be a good sleeping companion! ... If your cat sleeps with you this indicates that they enjoy your company and want to spend time with you.
The bottom line is that, yes, there are some risks associated with snoozing with your cat—but, as long as you know about them, it's perfectly okay! “If you aren't allergic and your cat sleeps soundly at night, then by all means, cuddle up with your kitty,”
Cats are believed to be the only mammals who don't taste sweetness. Cats are nearsighted, but their peripheral vision and night vision are much better than that of humans. Cats are supposed to have 18 toes (five toes on each front paw; four toes on each back paw). Cats can jump up to six times their length.
Just like people (and rats), cats likely do most of their most vivid dreaming during the REM (rapid eye movement) stage of sleep. These are moments when a cat's mouth may move, she may make tiny sounds, or her paws and legs may twitch. It may mean your cat is deep in a good (or weird) dream. That's all normal.
Changes in sleeping habits

The average adult cat may spend 16 to 18 hours per day sleeping. This is normal, but much of that sleeping is "catnapping." A cat should respond quickly to usual stimuli, such as the owner walking into the room or cat food being prepared.
While the majority of a cat's sleep is dozing in and out or taking naps, they do enter into a deeper sleep. Those deep sleep cycles for a cat last for about five minutes…and then it's right back to catnapping. This is their sleeping pattern until the cat wakes up.
Cats replenish their energy with a series of catnaps throughout the day instead of one long block of sleep like humans do. ... By choosing to sleep on you, your cat gets an extra level of protection and gets to bond with you at the same time. When your cat chooses to sleep on you, it's her way of saying "I love you.
