Cyphastrea is an attractive encrusting stoney coral perfectly suited for aquarium conditions. One of the earliest cyphastreas introduced into the aquarium hobby is composed of a sky blue base and red polyps, nicknamed meteor shower. A seemingly endless variety of colors, grafts and morphs have been introduced in recent years. At Top Shelf Aquatics we aquaculture over half a dozen varieties of cyphastrea. The rainbow color combinations of the bizzaro and skittles bomb cyphastrea are memorizing. The grafted colors of the Tropicana twist and fender bender cyphastrea brilliantly blend together. The most uniquely shaped variety comes from the branching cyphastrea. It’s pink and blueish base pushes coralites outward and onward creating a unique geometric pattern.
Over the past several years hobbyists have taken advantage of the cyphastreas power of encrustment. It perfectly takes on the shape and contours of whatever it is attached to. Placing cyphastrea frags on small statues, featuring their favorite movie characters to artistic sculptures. A fusion of art and nature. Cyphastrea is a hardy coral that enjoys a lower light system with par levels 100 or less. Keep your cyphastrea in low to moderate flow. But be cautious not to place the cyphastrea in a location with potential detritus build up, which could damage the soft tissue. They have the ability to pull in needed nutrients from the surrounding water column, making feeding unnecessary.
