A reefing icon, elegance coral or catalaphyllia jardinei is a large polyp stony coral that is one of the earliest coral’s introduced into the aquarium hobby. Their long tentacles run along the polyps edge with one or multiple centered mouths. In the early days of elegance husbandry, their hardiness was at an all time high, hardy and resilient. Years later the Indonesian varieties became more susceptible to infection, limiting their availability. Once Australian elegance corals became available, healthy specimens were once again restored to the hobby.
They typically exhibit iridescent green and teal coloration but new color varieties of red, purples and pink have recently been discovered.
Place your elegance in low to moderate lighting ranging from 100-150 par.
Provide low to moderate water flow as not to compress their tissue against their skeleton. The elegance should have a puffy appearance with gently loose swaying tentacles. Be cautious not to place other corals nearby.
Their tentacles can sweep the surrounding area, preventing other corals from getting too close.
Elegance corals will happily eat most meaty foods. At top shelf aquatics we feed a variety of coral foods such as Fauna Marin LPS pellets, PE mysis, and benepets.
