Green Carpet & Clean Water: Easy Aquarium Setup - Part 6-7

Creating the perfect aquarium isn’t just about the fish—it’s about crafting a thriving underwater world where plants grow beautifully, water stays clean, and everything works in harmony. In this video, I’m combining two important steps in building my modular aquarium system: planting a lush “green carpet” of Monte Carlo plants and setting up the filtration system to keep the tank crystal clear.

First, let’s talk about the Green Carpet. Monte Carlo is an aquarium plant known for its ability to create a dense, vibrant, grass-like carpet across the bottom of the tank. It’s not only visually stunning but also beneficial for the fish, as it provides hiding spots, oxygenates the water, and absorbs nitrates. Using tweezers, I carefully plant each stem into the sponge lids of my modular planting containers. These sponges hold the plants securely in place while allowing their roots to grow down into the nutrient-rich substrate. As the plants grow, they’ll form a beautiful green carpet that covers the bottom of the tank, giving it a natural and serene appearance.

Next, we move on to the Filter Fix, an essential part of keeping the tank clean and the water healthy for the fish. I designed a custom filtration system that combines an aquarium-safe sponge and a water pump for maximum efficiency. The sponge acts as a mechanical filter, trapping debris and dirt, while also serving as a home for beneficial bacteria that help break down waste. This is key to maintaining a balanced nitrogen cycle in the tank, which is crucial for the health of both the fish and the plants.

To connect the filter to the rest of the tank, I use a U-shaped bridge that circulates water between the modular planting system and the filter box. The water pump ensures that the flow is steady, helping to move debris towards the filtration area and keeping the bottom of the tank clean. The result? A low-maintenance aquarium that practically takes care of itself!
