Scolys are one of the most brilliantly colored LPS corals available in the reef-aquarium hobby. Truely, a one of a kind showpiece coral. Known for their vibrant neon coloration and uniquely patterned bodies.

Common color variants are: Bleeding Apple, Reverse Bleeding Apple, War Paint and the coveted master scoly, composed of contrasting streaks and splatters of color. Though you may occasionally encounter the UFO scoly, flaunting a unique ring-like pattern around the polyp. More rare and hard to come by are the master scolys. These highly desired corals exhibit a fusion of streaks, splatters and a ufo ring.

These corals do best in low light areas of your reef. A light spectrum made primarily of blues can bring out all of the vibrant coloration.

Place the scoly in a low water flow area, just enough to prevent debris and detritus from settling on the tissue. Observe the coral’s reaction, if it begins to deflate or retract within its skeleton, the flow is too high.

Their septa, or saw-like projections, have the potential to protrude through its tissue when the coral becomes overly stressed. Prevent fluctuations in your water parameters and provide them with slightly more nutrient rich water to thrive.

Scolys will happily accept most foods offered. Their large mouths can consume a variety of meaty foods. Here at Top Shelf Aquatics we feed PE mysis, calanus, Benepets and Fauna Marin LPS Pellets. Remember to turn off the flow while the coral is being fed, because it can take up to 15-20 minutes to consume its entire meal.

Scolys are an easy coral to maintain, making them a great choice for beginner and advanced hobbyists alike. Their wide variety of colors and patterns make them fun to collect and show-off.
