The Snowflake Moray Eel (Echidna nebulosa), also known as the Clouded Moray or Starry Moray, is a distinctive species inhabiting coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific region. Its unique coloration features a white to cream base adorned with black and yellow markings, resembling snowflakes, which provide effective camouflage among rocks and corals. Typically reaching lengths up to 24 inches, this eel is a nocturnal predator, feeding primarily on crustaceans and small fish. Its blunt teeth are specially adapted for crushing the hard shells of its prey. Despite its somewhat fearsome appearance, the Snowflake Moray is generally considered less aggressive compared to other moray species, making it a popular choice among marine aquarists.

In their natural habitat, Snowflake Morays utilize their intricate patterns to blend seamlessly into the reef environment, aiding in both ambush hunting and evasion from potential predators. Their keen sense of smell compensates for relatively poor eyesight, allowing them to effectively locate prey during nighttime foraging. While they are generally reclusive, preferring to hide within crevices during daylight hours, they can exhibit territorial behavior if threatened. It’s important to note that, like other morays, they possess a second set of jaws known as pharyngeal jaws, which assist in capturing and consuming prey.
