Do sea otters shed? Sea otters are famous for their dense fur coat. It is the thickest fur coat in the world with 850,000 to one million hairs per square inch. The short answer is yes, sea otters do shed but it can be hard to see since they spend the vast majority of their lives in the water. However, I did come across a clump of sea otter fur while I was cleaning one of their habitats. You can see just how dense sea otter fur really is even in this wet furball.
I am a marine biologist who has worked with rescued sea otters for over a decade. Each and every sea otter that I've worked with was a rescued and rehabilitated animal that was deemed non-releasable by federal wildlife agencies. Some of these otters were rescued after being tragically separated from their mothers while they were still dependent pups. One example is the sea otter in this video. Libby was less than 24 hours old when she was found alone after becoming separated from her mother. The little sea otter pup was rescued and rehabilitated at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, but due to her very young age, and lack of survival skills, she was deemed non-releasable by the NOAA and the Department of Fish & Wildlife. She has thrived under human care and already outlived the average life expectancy of wild otters.
