Armadillos are funny little creatures! ???? From Spanish to mean ‘little armored one’, Armadillos are the only living mammal with such a shell!
There are 20 different species of Armadillo! Most of which live mainly in Latin America with the exception of the Nine-banded Armadillo which has expanded into the USA.
Armadillos also have a sticky tongue. This is so that they can extract insects & termites from small tunnels! Places they can’t reach with just their claws.
Armadillos habitat must be warm & mild. They mostly live in burrows under the ground which protect them from the temperatures.
Armadillos spend most of their days sleeping. They eat things like beetles, ants, termites, and other small insects. They have bad eyesore & depend on their sense of smell.
Armadillos have different colors. Some of them are salmon-colored, while others have a red, grey, black or yellow color.
In the state of Texas, the nine-banded Armadillo is the official state animal. It is known for its impressive swimming skills & ability to hold its breath for up to six minutes at a time!
