The elephant has one of the longest pregnancy periods among mammals, around 22 months, and gives birth to just one calf.

The calves are born weighing up to 220 pounds and are cared for by their mother and other members of the herd.

When in activity, elephants can overheat as they do not lose heat to the environment very quickly. To refresh, they draw large volumes of blood to their ears and use them like fans.

African elephants are among the most insomniac mammals! In their natural environment, they sleep around 2 hours a day and can keep awake for up to 48 hours.

Elephant are slow creatures. The walking pace of an African savanna elephant is 4 mph, and they can run at speeds of up to 15 mph.
