This harbor seal just turned 48! That makes her the oldest harbor seal of all time. In the wild, harbor seals have a lifespan of about 25-30 years.

Just like the majority of the animals at Oregon Coast Aquarium, Skinny is a rescued and rehabilitated animal who was deemed non-releasable by the NOAA and the Department of Wildlife. Skinny was found emaciated on a beach in Washington when she was a very young pup. Because of her young age, it was determined that she had been abandoned or somehow became sadly separated from her mother. After her successful rehabilitation, Skinny was first transferred to the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium before finding her permanent home when the Oregon Coast Aquarium opened in 1992.

I came away so impressed by the quality of care that Oregon Coast Aquarium provides for their seals, sea lions, and sea otters that I've decided to do a live charity fundraiser to help them build a brand new marine life rescue center. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is one of just three wildlife rehabilitation facilities in the Pacific Northwest, and the only one in Oregon authorized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and NOAA to provide specialized care to endangered marine life like sea turtles, marine mammals, and sea birds. OCA is also one of only 13 organizations in the U.S. authorized to accept rescued sea otters.

Oregon Coast Aquarium currently rescues and rehabilitates about 300 animals annually. With this charity event, we are going to help them to expand their capacity and enable them to have a vet and vet tech on site, rather than contracted from other places like Oregon State University. This will help both their rehab program and their resident animals! Oregon Coast Aquarium hopes to start construction on a new Marine Wildlife Rehabilitation Center as soon as this year.

Named world class by USA Today and considered among the top 10 aquariums by just about every publication in the world, the Oregon Coast Aquarium is home to over 60,000 animals across nearly 400 species. Including rays, sharks, jellyfish, and marine mammals like seals, sea lions, and of course, sea otters.
