Let me bring you along on my experiment. Actually, this is more for you than I. We are not even considering cheap LED in this, leave that conversation in the trash. This should be understood now. And really this should only be an experiment vs fluorescent tubes…Buy quality LED strips and wire your own(I did not wire these or the lights over Phoenix, I have a box of 9 bars).
Interacting with Ziggy. Close ups again
If you live somewhere that a bulb is faster for heating your animal quickly then I believe this is only half accurate for you. We live in Florida and high temps are easier to achieve.
I’ve literally been studying LED, over a decade, for personal reasons and not a professional. I’ve had animals my whole life too, no restrictions(dogs weren’t allowed as a kid, unless it was a stray and we searching for an owner). The 90s had everything, good or bad, the internet wasn’t what it is today for research. I’m still trying to ID what a “Lava Lizard” was back then bc I want another, slate gray and not like those on the internet).
I’m able to grow anything plant wise….Except real trees. I’ve stated this before in my pond videos. I’m still trying to create bonsai even though I suck with the trees(8 more years before I can confirm my first, Japanese standards rather than root chopping of here in US. Papaya is under LED in my moss tank too). I did the outdoor cannabis growing before I had ever used as a teenager also). I believe that real trees req uvb to some degree too(I believe the tree frogs benefit as well also, show me why they don’t).
Some plants, like cannabis, need a high UVB light, while most others are sensitive. I believe the ambient temp(UVA) is the key in this equation also. Slow digestion at a steady and healthy rate, rather than a burst of extreme conditions, that they then maintain bc of body, color, and species type(reptiles in general). Enough invasive in Florida to prove 115F isn’t a must. Most of the snake are basking just before sundown(or sunrise) rather than blasting noon temps(that’s when they are still in grasses and tree cover, winter is different if they aren’t hibernating).
Ziggy tucks in next to his water and the glass at 97F. Around 80F he wakes up, and 85F-95F he chooses to bask.
I’m doing many things with LED atm and will try to share my observations, the opinion I have on what I see, the questions I’m asking in my own head, and hopefully any questions YOU have and ask in comments. I don’t know much, but there is plenty of info on the net, just don’t choose one source for your whole understanding when doing your own research.
