Golden lion tamarins use their long fingers to micromanipulate, excavate and consume their prey. To encourage this foraging behavior, keepers place the tamarins' bugs ???? in a variety of fake logs, plants???? and other enrichment items.
. . .
While golden lion tamarin Pedro is foraging around a fake bromeliad plant here, bromeliads are naturally occurring in the golden lion tamarins' home range. The snufflemat was handcrafted by Small Mammal House keepers tightly weaving fleece into a rubber mat. Both forms of enrichment require the tamarins to dig their mealworms out!
. . .
In the early 1970s, less than 200 golden lion tamarins remained in the wild. Today, 72% of the golden lion tamarins living in the wild today are the descendants of zoo-born animals. The golden lion tamarins in zoos today serve as an insurance population—in case the wild population was to dip again—and are ambassadors for their wild counterparts. We hope you fall in love with their charm and cute antics, learn more about golden lion tamarins and take meaningful steps to help us conserve this species. Happy #GoldenLionTamarinDay! ????
