BMW Brings Upgraded Straight-Six Performance to Europe With 3.0-Liter Mild-Hybrid Engines

BMW enthusiasts in Europe have reason to celebrate as the Bavarian automaker finally brings the upgraded straight-six engines to the continent that North American buyers have been enjoying for some time. Despite the industry’s growing focus on electric vehicles, BMW proves there’s still innovation left in internal combustion engines, combining more power, better efficiency, and lower emissions in one refined package.

The heart of the update is BMW’s 3.0-liter inline-six engine, now equipped with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, boosting performance across multiple models. For the M340i xDrive Sedan and M340i xDrive Touring, this engine now produces 387 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque, which represents an increase of 18 hp and 30 lb-ft over the previous European version. These gains are mirrored in the M440i xDrive Coupe, Convertible, and Gran Coupe, as well as the M240i xDrive Coupe, giving the entire lineup a more exhilarating driving experience.

Performance improvements are tangible. BMW claims a reduction of 0.1 seconds in the 0-100 km/h sprint for these vehicles, a modest but meaningful improvement for enthusiasts who value every fraction of a second. Beyond sheer speed, fuel efficiency has been enhanced thanks to the mild-hybrid system. The M240i xDrive Coupe now consumes 8.0 liters/100 km compared to the previous 8.7-8.8 liters/100 km, while CO2 emissions drop from 199-200 g/km to 183 g/km, demonstrating that performance and sustainability can coexist.

Efficiency improvements extend to the 3-Series and 4-Series models. The M340i xDrive Sedan now delivers 7.5 liters/100 km, and the Touring version rates 7.9 liters/100 km. The M440i xDrive Coupe, Convertible, and Gran Coupe models achieve 7.7, 7.7, and 7.8 liters/100 km respectively, equating to 30.5–30.1 US mpg. BMW has managed to balance performance and efficiency without compromising the character of its six-cylinder engines.

Interestingly, the North American market has already been enjoying these updated specs since last year, meaning European enthusiasts are now catching up to the performance levels their counterparts across the Atlantic have experienced. Meanwhile, models like the M240i and Z4 M40i continue to offer slightly lower outputs at 382 hp, maintaining their own niche within the lineup.

BMW hasn’t stopped at just engine updates. The 4-Series Gran Coupe and i4 models will now feature laser rear lights as standard and offer Adaptive LED headlights as an option, enhancing both visibility and style. Additionally, a new color, Cape York Green, joins the palette for the 2-Series Gran Coupe with M Sport packages, offering buyers more personalization options.

This upgrade signifies BMW’s ongoing commitment to internal combustion engines, even as the industry shifts toward electrification. By improving power, efficiency, and emissions simultaneously, BMW ensures that the legacy of the straight-six continues to thrive in Europe, providing enthusiasts with a driving experience that balances performance, technology, and environmental responsibility. For fans of the brand, it’s a clear message: the six-cylinder spirit is far from dead.
