How to Do a Water Change for a Reef Tank:
Step 1: Prepare New Saltwater
Use RO/DI water (not tap water)
Add reef salt mix (e.g., Red Sea, Tropic Marin, Blue Treasure)
Mix until salinity reaches 1.025 (or match your tank’s level)
Aerate with a small powerhead and heat to match tank temperature (around 25°C / 77°F)
Let it mix for at least 4–12 hours before use (some brands may need 24 hours)
Step 2: Turn Off Equipment (Optional)
Turn off:
Return pump
Protein skimmer
Wavemaker (optional but recommended for clean removal)
Auto Top-Off (ATO) to prevent it from topping up fresh water during the change
Step 3: Clean if Needed
Use this chance to vacuum detritus from the sandbed (but carefully, especially in coral tanks)
Clean filter socks or mechanical media (don’t clean all bio-media at once!)
Step 4: Remove Old Water
Siphon out 10–20% of tank water
Avoid disturbing coral placement or anemones
✅ Step 5: Add New Saltwater
Slowly pour or pump in the new saltwater
Match temperature and salinity closely
Avoid sudden flow over corals — use a bowl or diffuser if needed
✅ Step 6: Turn Equipment Back On
Reactivate return pump, skimmer, wavemaker, ATO
Monitor corals and fish for a few minutes to ensure everything looks normal
✅ Step 7: Recheck Parameters (Optional but Ideal)
After about 30 minutes, check salinity, temperature, pH, and alkalinity if needed.
