There are many ways to cycle a tank and a lot of people use the chemical method. The chemical starters often don't actually have the live bacteria needed. Also unless you are super familiar with checking the chemistry of your water its hard to know how much to add or subtract to balance your paramotors. Just adding muck from another only introduces ammonia that one time. Meaning the cycle only happens once vs the goldfish cycle over and over creating more stability. You can think the tank is cycled, add your fish, and see a deadly spike. When buying your goldfish find a place with a buy back system, mine rehomes them to a lady who grows them to full size and sells them to pond owners. Never release them in the wild after.
