00:05 I bought SmartCat Kitty's Garden cat grass for my kittens to try.
It comes with a 6-inch wide base for holding 5-inch wide planters.
The wide base is what makes this grass kit the most suitable for playful kittens.
Let's see what's inside.
Instructions for growing grass.
The planting container is divided into four parts.
The bottom container is for excess water.
Four pellets and a bag of seeds.
I cannot remove the netting from the pellets...
So, I just soaked the pellets as they are in the netting.
I use all four pellets at once for planting all seeds.
With four containers, I can use one pellet at a time for planting once a week.
This would provide kittens with fresh grass every week.
It takes about 10 minutes for pellets to absorb the water.
Let's remove excess water.
And look - now it's easy for me to remove the netting from the pellets :)
Remove a teaspoon of soil from each pellet and set it aside.
I think there are enough seeds in the package for planting 2-3 times.
Well, I am going to plant them all at once this time.
Mix seeds with the soil.
Cover it all with the remaining soil and slightly pack it down.
My kittens are very curious about all this digging :)
I planted seeds in all four sections of the planting container.
May 30th, 2025
01:48 All set and ready.
I use a turkey buster to water the grass.
To maintain moist soil, I add about 30 ml of water daily.
Make sure there is no water excess in the bottom container.
The first grass sprouts show 3 days later on June 2nd.
The grass grows noticeably every day.
It took 6 days for the grass to grow up to 4 inches tall.
On June 5th, I moved the planter from the shelf to the floor so the kittens could easily reach it.
So, here kittens can play with the grass and perhaps eat it too.
02:45 All three kittens tested the grass on the same day :)
Lisa, the female kitten, seems to be a grass connoisseur!
I started mowing the lawn on June 7th when it was about 5 inches tall.
03:12 Use scissors to trim off about 1 inch from the top of the grass.
Sprinkle the grass cuttings on top of the kitten's meal.
It makes the meal look very fancy :)
03:32 Let’s see what kittens have to say about the first grass serving.
Everyone gets about the same amount.
Teddy eats the most, always helping his siblings with their meals.
That's him - already checking on others’ plates.
Lisa is the smallest kitten, and she usually eats less.
This time Lisa eats everything clean, including the grass!
And she helps herself with some leftovers on the nearest plate too :)
04:05 I keep trimming grass every day for a fresh topping of one wet meal out of 4 daily servings.
Lisa also likes to help herself by plucking some more grass from the garden.
Well, whatever Lisa wants, Lisa gets :)
The grass grows taller despite daily trimming for one meal topping.
Here you can see the garden on June 10th, about two weeks since I planted the grass.
Kittens always attend to grass trimming and watering :)
Lisa is a true greenie, more into nature than boys.
By June 17th, about 3 weeks since I planted the garden, most of the grass turned brownish.
05:02 I cut all the wilted grass to the bottom on June 21st and let the soil dry out.
Here you can see roots of the grass grew through the holes in the planters.
I let it dry for about a month.
Use a screwdriver to push the soil through the bottom holes of the planters.
Break the dry soil for easy storage in a dry, cool place till the next time I will grow grass for my cats.
I will keep you updated.
Have fun and happy kittens :)
