Goby and pistol shrimp have an amazing mutual symbiotic relationship. As the shrimp burrows through the substrate, it finds food and creates a safe haven from predators. However, due to their poor eyesight, they are extremely vulnerable when they leave the burrow. That is where the goby come in. Standing guard over the burrow, the goby will warn the shrimp of any threats and they can all retreat to the safety of the burrow.
I find it fascinating that the shrimp know exactly where to put the “spoils.” Watch as sand gets pushed forward and rocks/coral pieces are gently stacked on the edge of the burrow to create a wall.
