A clever sea otter helps clean up the habitat by putting away her toys! This type of behavior is adorable, but more importantly it helps keep aging sea otters active. Older sea otters, like Clara who is somewhere between 11 and 13 years old, can develop arthritis and other conditions that can be prevented by daily activities. Sea otters are also incredibly smart and love problem solving, so behaviors like this also stimulate their minds.
This beautiful sea otter is named Clara. She was rescued at Moss Landing Harbor, California and deemed non-releasable by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service due to a history of unsafe interactions with people and pets. This also makes her a southern sea otter, native to California, where her wild cousins have been dealing with a string of atmospheric rivers. Recently, I was asked by a follower "what do sea otters do during storms, like the atmospheric rivers that are hitting California?" I answered that question here: https://youtu.be/EXzsZ_XdyxM
