Dolphins are aquatic animals belonging to the infraorder Cetacea. The extant families Delphinidae, Platanistidae, Iniidae, Pontoporiidae, and the extinct Lipotidae are commonly referred to as dolphins. Dolphins are a group of 40 living species.

The Maui's dolphin, which is just 1.7 meters (5 feet 7 inches) long and weighs 50 kilograms (110 pounds), is the smallest of the dolphins, whereas the killer whale is 9.5 meters (31 feet 2 inches) long and weighs 10 tonnes (11 short tons). Dolphins may leap up to 30 feet in the air (9.1 m). Several dolphin species have sexual dimorphism, which means that males are bigger than females. They have streamlined bodies and flippers on two of their limbs. Some dolphins can swim at speeds of up to 29 kilometres (18 miles) per hour over short distances, however they are not as adaptable as seals. Dolphins catch fast-moving prey with their conical-shaped teeth. They have well-developed hearing that is suited for both air and water, and some can live even if they are blind.
