Rabies is a zoonotic and notifiable viral disease that affects warm blooded mammals including human beings. The disease is transmitted through bites, scratches, inhalation or contact with fomites containing the virus. Bites accounts for more than 95% of the rabies cases with dogs being among the major transmitters of this deadly disease. Rabid animal usually acts differently from the healthy animal. A pet that is usually friendly may snap at you and try to bite, more saliva drooling from their mouth since they can’t swallow as a result of paralysis of lower jaw and muscles, general sickness and animal tend to bite at everything if excited. Some animals appear timid, shy and they usually reject food and avoid water. When bitten by a rabid animal, ensure you wash the wound with clean water and soap and seek medical attention immediately. Although the disease has no cure in animals, the good thing is that it is preventable through vaccination. Take action by ensuring that your pet or donkey has been vaccinated and vaccines are up to date so that we can kick this deadly disease out of this world thus ensuring one health with zero death.
