Hello, my dear friends.
Common lionfish ( Pterois miles ) .. Reach up to 40 cm. at depth 2 - 60 m. A widespread species, the most common Lion Fish encountered in our area.
It is found singly or in groups infringing coral reefs as well as in fields of algae. The lionfish are the most spectacular Scorpions family members. They have a warning coloration of red and white, very long dorsal fin spines, and greatly enlarged pectoral fins. They have their own hunting technique. They use their wide pectoral fins to corner prey fishes.
If one of these is careless enough to leave its sheltering school, the usual slow-moving Lion Fish darts forward in an astonishing burst of speed and sucks the prey into its gaping mouth.
