The Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) is a large owl with two prominent tufts just above the ears. The plumage is generally dark brown, which contributes to camouflage, but because it has a wide territorial distribution, it has variations in plumage throughout the Americas. It can be found in a wide variety of habitats, from dense forests to deserts and sparse grasslands, even in small wooded towns. It usually hunts in pairs of males and females, with one individual singing sequentially and the other responding. Its diet covers a wide range of prey, including mammals, birds and reptiles.
