The wild hog, also known as the wild boar or feral pig (Sus scrofa), is a highly adaptable and intelligent animal native to parts of Europe, Asia, and North Africa but now found in many parts of the world, including North and South America. These animals are known for their muscular build, coarse bristled hair, and long, curved tusks. Wild hogs typically weigh between 150 to 300 pounds, though some individuals can grow significantly larger depending on their environment and food availability.

Wild hogs are omnivores with a varied diet that includes roots, fruits, small animals, insects, and carrion. Their excellent sense of smell helps them locate food buried beneath the ground. They are mostly nocturnal and prefer dense vegetation or forests for cover during the day. Wild hogs are social animals and often travel in groups called sounders, typically made up of females and their young, while mature males tend to be more solitary.

Although they play an ecological role in their native habitats, wild hogs are considered invasive pests in many areas, especially in the United States. Their rooting behavior can cause significant damage to crops, pastures, and natural ecosystems. They also compete with native wildlife for food and habitat and are known carriers of diseases like swine brucellosis and pseudorabies, which can impact livestock and even humans.

Because of their rapid reproduction—sows can birth two litters of 4–12 piglets per year—controlling wild hog populations is a major challenge for land managers and farmers. Methods include hunting, trapping, and exclusion fencing. Despite their destructive tendencies, wild hogs are also valued by hunters for their meat and challenging pursuit. These resilient animals are a fascinating example of nature’s ability to adapt and thrive—even in places they were never meant to be.
