If you take your dog to a groomer, you may be surprised when you pick your dog up… at the haircut, he or she is going home wearing.
Before we get into all that, let me remind you what purpose pet grooming serves you and your pet.
Pet grooming is not a service designed around your needs, it is a service that is specific to each pet and their individual needs.
What does that mean?
Dogs vary in coat type, (they are not all the same) they come in various skin types, they also have various grooming needs that if met correctly will enhance the existence of your pet.
Dogs also live in climates where they may not have originated from.
These are called Variables my friends…They are circumstances that differentiate one dog from the next.
Whether you groom your dog yourself or take your dog to a professional dog groomer…you need to come to terms with “what are the grooming needs of my dog… based on his skin and coat type, lifestyle, and personal makeup.”
Example: if my dog is a shedding double-coated dog breed such as a golden retriever…
His grooming needs are to maintain the undercoat and topcoat regularly in order for his coat to protect his skin and to do the job, his coat was designed to do.
And that is to filter dirt, grime, and allergens from sitting against the skin (which is the largest organ in his body.)
Considering your dog's toilet and playground are outside, their coat is a filter between their skin and everything they are in contact with.
Filters need to be cleaned and changed often or they become clogged and lose their purpose.
That is the same for your dog's coat. It can only filter for so long until it may become clogged and lose its purpose…to protect your dogs skin.
What happens then…your dog's skin can become itchy and irritated which can lead to a skin infection.
Regular brushing and bathing are essential to the health of your dog's skin and coat.
Is your dog a breed that requires his hair to be trimmed? It’s true, you can grow a full coat on a dog such as a Maltese, Yorkie, and so on. Yes, you can, but only if you are going to brush that coat daily and bathe weekly. That is a big commitment, and as a professional dog groomer, I love to see a dog in a full coat.
But what I don’t like to see is a dog in a full coat that is wearing a dirty, unkept coat for weeks without being attended to properly.
Fortunately, grooming your dog or taking them to a groomer is the solution.
Now let’s talk about some of the mistakes made when grooming a dog…
1.) Not using professional tools, products, and equipment to groom your dog.
2.) Improperly using your tools, products, and equipment to groom your dog will not produce results.
3.) Rushing through the bathing and pre-brushing step of the grooming session.
4.) Not following the same steps to groom any dog. Repetition will eliminate the possibility of forgetting a step. Following the same steps, every time will speed up your grooming session. I have linked my free download “My 11 steps to groom any dog” in the description of this video for you to follow when grooming a dog. You can view it or print it out and use it as a guide when grooming a dog.
5.) Waiting too long to brush or groom your dog. I recommend keeping your dog on a 4-6 week grooming schedule in order to prevent your dog's coat from becoming matted and the skin from collecting accessive dirt and grime which leads to skin irritation often misdiagnosed as skin allergies.
6.) Leaving too much coat when giving your dog a haircut. A dog in a long coat requires daily brushing and weekly bathing.
You must consider this when choosing the appropriate trim for your dog. Evaluate your dog's activities and lifestyle to determine how much coat your dog should wear.
For instance, do you like with your dog or allow them to swim regularly?
If so, you must realize these factors will require close care for your dog's skin and coat. Otherwise, your dog's coat is more likely to become matted and compromise skin health.
In that case, a shorter more manageable trim for your dog is the better choice.
