A sea otter throws her head back and dances like no one is watching. This spinning sea otter is Libby. She was less than 24 hours old when she was found alone after becoming separated from her mother. Due to her very young age, and lack of survival skills, this little otter was deemed non-releasable by the NOAA and the Department of Fish & Wildlife.
I am a marine biologist who has worked with rescued sea otters for over a decade. Each and every sea otter that I've worked with was a rescued and rehabilitated animal that was deemed non-releasable by federal wildlife agencies. Some of these otters were rescued after being tragically separated from their mothers while they were still dependent pups. Others were rescued after unsafe interactions with humans, similar to sea otter 841 - the sea otter stealing surfboards in Santa Cruz. See my reaction to that story, and what I think authorities should do about that sea otter, here: https://youtu.be/zWrudu42Q9M
