Leviathan in a 240.000 liter reef tank ???? at Natural History Museum in Karlsruhe (Germany)

For five years, Vivarium director Johannes Kirchhauser searched for a giant bristle worm in the 240.000 liter reef aquarium — and finally found it on April 1st.

Despite its impressive 1.5-meter length, the worm had remained hidden in the coral reef for years.

The first clues were bite marks on a brain coral and later, spiderweb-like structures.

Now it's clear: these are silk tubes where the nocturnal worm hides. So far, it has only been spotted twice.

Recently, the team found the worm injured in the tank.

Michael Speck suspects triggerfish as the culprits, as they breed nearby. Sharks are likely not responsible. Bristle worms are often introduced via live rock.
