Your pet needs to get its shots each year, but could a COVID-19 vaccination be one of them?
COVID-19 is a zoonotic virus, which means that like many common colds, rabies and HIV, it can jump from animals to humans. Since humans continue to interfere with wild animal habitats, this can happen fairly easily.
How much COVID-19 affects a particular animal depends on the genetic structure of a protein called ACE2. The better the virus fits into the ACE2 protein structure, the greater its impact.
Primates, with their very similar genetic make-up to humans, are at the highest risk of catching the SARS-CoV-2 virus from humans. Animals like mink and large cats are very vulnerable to COVID-19 symptoms.
So should you get your pet vaccinated against COVID-19? How is an animal vaccine different from the ones humans would get? Could you pass your COVID-19 infection on to an animal?
