In the midnight zone, 1,000-4,000 meters below the surface, the only light comes from bioluminescence. Temperature is constant, around 39°F, and the pressure is extreme. While this zone contains 70% of all seawater, it’s difficult to explore and poorly understood. Species that live here include: microbes, larvae, zooplankton, mussels, algae, anglerfish, and deep-sea corals.
Sperm whales dive here—as deep as 3,000 meters, for as long as 45 minutes—hunting for squid. In fact, by examining their stomach contents (and collecting their feces!), we can learn about other species that live in this zone.
