Armadillo means "little armored one". The carapace develops through calcification in the top part of dermal layer of the skin and is composed of small, strong, bony plates (called osteoderms or scutes) that are overlaid by keratinous epidermis (called scales).
Souther Naked-tail Armadillo is insectivorous with arthtopods (mostly ants and termites) comprising more than 90 proc. of their diets.
mammal.
The sense of smell in these mammals plays a major role, as reflected by the great development of the nasal structures, olfactory bulbs,a nd related brain regions.
The brain of chlamyphorids is relatively well developed, but it has a smooth surface.
Their body temperature is lower than in most other mammals and varies with ambient temperature and levels of activities. It is typically 33-35°C but can be as low as 32 ° C and as high as 38,5°C.
