We’ve gotten this question quite a few times, so it’s time to talk about why this walrus calf blows those adorable raspberries!
Like all young marine mammals, walrus calves learn and refine skills that will be important in adulthood through play behaviors.
When she dunks her head under the water, blowing bubbles and mouthing at the floor of the pool, she’s following her natural instincts to search the bottom of the seafloor. When she blows raspberries, she's starting to explore and develop the Pacific walrus’s wide range of vocalizations.
We see these behaviors with animals in human care and in the wild!
