We ran an experiment to see what is the best soil to use when trying to grow aquarium plants emersed. After 110 days, we finally have the result and they are very surprising - one of the soils clearly outperformed the other. In this video we go over exactly why this happened and what makes this soil so much better than others for growing aquarium plants.

We created two identical emersed aquarium plant setups, both growing anubias nana plants out of water. The only difference between the emersed plant setups was one used Pro-Mix potting soil and the other used a generic black earth soil from Vigoro.

After 110 days the Pro-Mix anubias plants are looking super healthy and grew really well. We can now propagate the anubias plants and end up with so many new plants. The aquarium plants grown in black earth have numerous yellowing leaves and look like they are experiencing severe nutrient deficiencies. To turn these anubias plants around we are trying out a combination of hydroponic fertilizer and a foliar spray to heal the plants and get them growing again.
