Der Karpfen (Cyprinus carpio) ist eine der bekanntesten europäischen Fischarten und als Typusart der Gattung Cyprinus sowohl im Deutschen als auch in der Fachsprache Namensgeber der Familie der Karpfenfische (Cyprinidae), der Überfamilie der Karpfenfischähnlichen (Cyprinoidei) und der Ordnung der Karpfenartigen (Cypriniformes). Er ist seit der Antike ein beliebter Speisefisch, der häufig in Fischteichen angezogen wird und dazu auch in zahlreichen Ländern weltweit eingeführt wurde, wo er teilweise als invasive Art auftritt. Der Wildbestand gilt dagegen heute als bedroht.

The common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is one of the best-known European fish species and, as the type species of the genus Cyprinus, is the eponym of the family of carp fishes (Cyprinidae), the superfamily of carp fish-like (Cyprinoidei) and the order of carp-like (Cypriniformes), both in German and in technical language. It has been a popular food fish since ancient times, often attracted to fish ponds, and for this purpose it has been introduced to numerous countries worldwide, where it sometimes appears as an invasive species. The wild population, on the other hand, is now considered endangered.
