Walruses are bizarre animals. A lot of people have commented that they look like something out of Star Wars. Why do the walruses in my videos have metal caps on their tusks? I answer that and other frequently asked questions here: https://youtu.be/Z3KmiKbq7Jo

Walruses are pinnipeds. Which is a sub-order of carnivores that includes seals and sea lions. And they do share a lot of similarities with their genetic cousins. Like flippers and whiskers. But unlike seals and sea lions, who live near some densely populated places like California. Walruses live exclusively in the Arctic where they play an important role in the religion, folklore, and culture of many indigenous peoples. However, this extreme northern habitat also means it is extremely unlikely for the rest of the world to ever see a walrus.

But I promise you these are real animals. The walruses I work with are named Balzak and Lakina. Both walruses were born at the Aquarium du Quebec back in 2016 and I had the privilege of working with them for several years. During that time, Balzak and Lakina participated in several important research projects into the metabolism of walruses and this information was used to enact laws and policies aimed at protecting their cousins in the wild. Recently, Balzak and Lakina have moved to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium where I now have the opportunity to work with him again after several years.
