Watch this elderly sea otter solve a food puzzle in the most adorable way imaginable. All three sea otters in this habitat were rescued and deemed non-releasable by the NOAA and the Department of Fish and Wildlife. In the wild, sea otters must actively forage for food which can require high levels of problem solving. We try to simulate this for animals under human care by providing puzzles and other ways that engage the minds of these animals.
Sea otters are the largest member of the weasel family, closely related to badgers, wolverines, and even domesticated ferrets. Like their land-based cousins, sea otters are especially clever and mischievous. They love being presented with new challenges that require them to ferret out a solution.

The elderly sea otter seen here is Moea. She was rescued and released several times by the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Unfortunately, situations kept arising that required additional rescue and rehabilitation. This lack of survival skills, as well as a few unsafe interactions with humans and pets, led the NOAA and the Department of Fish and Wildlife to deem her non-releasable. She has thrived under human care and has already outlived the average life expectancy of wild sea otters.
