The alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula) is one of the largest freshwater fish in North America, capable of reaching lengths up to 10 feet (3 meters) and weights up to 350 pounds (158 kilograms). It has a torpedo-shaped body covered in diamond-shaped, interlocking (ganoid) scales that are dark olivaceous brown above and white to yellowish beneath, with dark brown blotches on all fins. The species is characterized by a broad, short snout filled with two rows of large, sharp teeth on the upper jaw, resembling an alligator's snout.
