Cycle an aquarium, or nitrogen cycling, is the process of filtering toxins from the water in an aquarium. It essentially involves creating colonies of bacteria in the tank’s biological filter to destroy ammonia particles produced by the fish.
During the first steps of the cycle, fish waste and other decomposing organic matter produce ammonia. This highly toxic gas will kill your fish and other aquarium inhabitants if it’s not removed urgently from the water.
The entire process helps in the breaking down of ammonia into nitrite and then the conversion of the resultant nitrites into nitrates.
