Facts on Elephant Pregnancy
Gestation period
Elephants have the longest gestation period of any mammal, lasting 18–22 months for Asian elephants and up to 22 months for African elephants. This unique hormonal mechanism allows the calf to develop in the womb for almost two years.
Birth
Elephants usually give birth to one calf at a time while standing, but twins can occur in about 1% of births. Newborn elephants can weigh up to 268 pounds and stand about 3 ft tall. As labor approaches, the mother will seek close contact with another female in her family
