How do fish make electricity? Electric Eel facts: shockingly fishy | Animal Facts
One of the most fascinating fish in the underwater fauna is the eel.
A person that sees an eel for the first time may confuse it with a sea snake, which is very poisonous. This is clear because of its long, cigar-shaped body and three fins fused into one (dorsal, tail, and anal fins).
The eel's small head with large oval eyes and wide mouth completes the resemblance between the eel and the snake. The outer teeth of the eel, which form the cutting edge, are perfectly developed. The slit-shaped gill openings reach the abdominal part. Immediately behind them, the pectoral fins are visible. Completely devoid of scales, an eel's skin is abundantly covered with a layer of mucus secreted by special glands.
The color of eels is not particularly diverse and is dictated by the need for camouflage during the hunt. Therefore, most commonly sea eels are colored in different shades of gray, black, brownish, or greenish. Sometimes there are specimens with contrasting spotted coloring. Sea eels are much larger than their freshwater counterparts and can reach a length of up to 3 m and weigh up to 100 kg.
The distribution range of sea eels is quite wide and includes the warm waters of the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans, as well as the adjacent seas. Some species of sea eels are better tolerant of colder waters and can be found in the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic. In the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, and the Black Sea, sea eel fish swim quite rarely. These fish inhabit both the coastal zone and the open sea, not descending deeper than 500 m.
