Although Sergeant Major Damselfish are common in the saltwater aquarium hobby in the United States, swimming with hundreds upon hundreds of them in St. Maarten was an amazing experience. In the aquarium, these fish look pretty, and they're usually quite small when being sold. However, as they grow, they can become aggressive and territorial in the confines of the home aquarium. They can also grow to 6-9 inches in length, outgrowing small and mid-sized aquariums. In St. Maarten, we had the opportunity to see them by the hundreds and to swim among them. The structures on the ocean floor are left over from an old Sea Trek installation that appeared to be abandoned, or at least not currently in use during our visit.
