Was this seal pup abandoned?
Sometimes, it’s hard to tell. Momma seals will often leave their offspring on shore and go away to hunt. The momma’s nurse the pups, and they need nourishment to make milk. The pup might end up alone on a rocky shore or beach, or even the back of a boat, for more than 12 hours. Still, the momma seal normally will return to collect the furry little baby.
In rare cases, the pups are either sick or injured. Or truly abandoned. And they need a helping hand from certified and authorized marine mammal stranding responders. A rescue might be a rare occurrence, but it needs to be done carefully and with veterinary guidance.
If you live in an area that normally sees seals or sea lions, you can look into volunteering with a marine mammal stranding network. In the USA, the federal NOAA oversees each authorized stranding network: National Marine Mammal Stranding Response Network | NOAA Fisheries
I was a certified and trained responder for many years in Washington State, and I have many wonderful memories of the long days of “Seal Sitting.”
