Because of the size and weight of their complex digestive systems, bovines have a solid, stocky build

The family of bovines is known from fossils from the early Miocene, about 20 million years ago.

The first bovidians were small animals, somewhat resembling modern deer, that likely lived in woodland environments

Then the number of bovine species increased dramatically in the late Miocene

At the time many bovids have adapted to a more open and green habitat

The largest number of modern bovids is found in Africa, while the least diverse biota of bovids is found in Asia
