Dolphins are aquatic mammals belonging to the infraorder Cetacea. The extinct Lipotidae family and the living Delphinidae family (oceanic dolphins), Platanistidae (Indian river dolphins), called Iniidae (New World river dolphins), and Pontoporiidae (brackish dolphins) are all known as dolphins (baiji or Chinese river dolphin). Dolphins are a group of 40 living species.

There are currently 42 dolphin species and seven porpoise species.

A dolphin's pregnancy can last anywhere from nine to sixteen months.
