Unique Salamander: The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a unique type of salamander that retains its juvenile characteristics throughout its life. It exhibits neoteny, meaning it retains its larval features like external gills, fin-like limbs, and a fully aquatic lifestyle even as it reaches sexual maturity.

Native to Mexico: Axolotls are native to the Xochimilco and Chalco regions of central Mexico. They were once abundant in the wild, but due to habitat loss and pollution, their populations have drastically declined.
