A marine biologist reacts to a man rescuing a thresher shark.

Full disclosure, I specialize in marine mammals like dolphins, sea otters, and walruses. These animals all breath oxygen, just like humans. When they strand, it is most likely because they are sick and unable to swim. Throwing a stranded dolphin, seal, or sea lion back into the water will most likely result in the animal drowning. The best thing to do if you see a stranded marine mammal is to call a local wildlife center, the NOAA, or the state department of wildlife. Here, in the Pacific Northwest, there are only 3 marine rescue centers authorized to rescue endangered marine mammals. Which is why I am hosting a live charity fundraiser to help the Oregon Coast Aquarium build a new marine wildlife center. Learn more here: https://youtu.be/-n6iPlv8a7A

Unlike marine mammals, sharks are fish who need to be submerged in water in order to breath. Large species of sharks, like thresher, tiger, salmon, and great white sharks, can only survive a few minutes out of water before they suffocate. The man in this video did the right thing by rescuing this shark. At first I couldn't tell the exact species, but after watching it again, I'm fairly confident it is a thresher shark. Threshers are large mackerel sharks found in all temperate and tropical oceans and are listed as Vulnerable by the World Conservation. Thresher sharks are named for their exceptionally long tail fin which they use as a weapon to stun prey.
