Why is this beluga whale spitting water on guests?
This beluga whale is named Juno and he is pretty famous. There are countless videos of him interacting with guests, dancing with mariachi bands, and scaring little kids. Here he is displaying a really cool natural behavior. Unlike most dolphins species, who have hard rostrums, beluga whales have flexible lips that allow them to make faces and spit water. In the wild, beluga whales eat clams and other bivalves that burrow under the sandy bottom of estuaries, rivers, and shallow sea beds. Once they find a clam, they'll spit water into the sand to unearth it!
In this video, though, Juno is playing. It's well known that this individual whale loves to get a startled reaction out of humans. Beluga whales, like their dolphin cousins, are incredibly smart and interactive. He reminds me of another famous beluga whale, Hvladmir, the whale that escaped from a Russian military program.
