I’ll use any excuse to do novel enrichment! Birthdays are a great time for animals and humans alike. The cakes have shrimp frozen in ice with a clam paste to hold them together. This gives her some mental stimulation as well as a tasty snack.
One of the biggest (and best) parts of working with animals under human care is coming up with new and exciting things to stimulate their minds. In the wild, sea otters stimulate their minds through survival activities such as foraging and problem solving ways to crack into clams and mussels.
All three sea otters in this video were rescued and rehabilitated by Monterey Bay Aquarium. The birthday girl is Libby. She was less than 24 hours old when she was found alone after becoming separated from her mother. Due to her very young age, and lack of survival skills, she was deemed non-releasable by the same government agencies and will remain under human care.
